There’s something here for a preacher (from American Enterprise Institute):
In his new op-ed for The New York Times, “The downside of inciting envy,” AEI President Arthur Brooks examines a strong link between economic envy and unhappiness and cites survey data to conclude that a national shift toward envy would be toxic for American culture.
He writes that “fomenting bitterness over income differences may be powerful politics, but it injures our nation. We must increase mobility for more Americans with a radical opportunity agenda. Only a shared, joyful mission of freedom, opportunity, and enterprise for all will heal the envy and remind us who we truly are.”
Oh the wheel-spinning involved in envy. It’s corrosive. Rejoice in the Joneses’ prosperity, don’t get all excited about keeping up with them.
